For the 18th year, the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen will be the focal point of nine days of concerts, interpretation courses, seminars, lectures and discussions. Composers, interpreters, musicologists, sound projectionists and music lovers are cordially invited to attend the Stockhausen Concerts and Courses Kürten 2019.
Stockhausen's motto for the 2019 courses is
LEARNING WHO INSPIRES.
Concerts
Instrumental, vocal and electronic works by Karlheinz Stockhausen will be performed in nine concerts. The concerts are performed by the faculty of the master classes, many of whom worked with Stockhausen for many years. Also internationally renowned guest musicians will perform. In three concerts selected participants will perform compositions which were prepared during the master classes. All dress rehearsals are open to the participants of the courses.

Interpreters are requested to indicate on their application the works prepared. The faculty is willing to assist participants in preparing themselves for course attendance ahead of time. Interpreters will receive the respective faculty address after they have registered for participation.
INORI-gestures (Instructor: Alain Louafi) Due to the special significance given to the synthesis of music and gesture in Stockhausen’s works, the gestures from the composition INORI (1973–74) are rehearsed in this course. The course takes place each morning before the master classes and other events of the courses and is open to all interested participants.
Sound projection (Instructors: Kathinka Pasveer, sound projectionist; Reinhard Klose, sound engineer)
In the context of the daily rehearsals and concerts with
Stockhausen’s closest technical collaborators, anyone who
is interested in learning more about the sound projection
in performances of Stockhausens electronic, vocal and
instrumental works can experience, first-hand, which
aspects must be addressed and how they are can be solved
from the sound engineering point of view.
In addition to the daily concerts, open rehearsals, master classes, and concert introductions, there will be seminars, lectures and workshops on the music of Stockhausen given by international Stockhausen experts. These events are designed to be equally accessible to those already familiar with Stockhausens music and to those who have had very little or no exposure to his music but who are curious to know more.

Prizes
For the best interpretations of Stockhausen works performed in the participants' concerts, three prizes
(4000 €, 2500 €, and 1500 €) will be awarded following the final concert. A prize may be divided among several musicians.
Location
Kürten is Stockhausen’s hometown, where he lived from 1965 to 2007. The "Stockhausen-Community" Kürten is situated about 30 kilometers (19 miles) east of Cologne in the part of Germany called the Bergisches Land. For the 18th time, the community of Kürten is allowing the Stockhausen Foundation for Music to use its school complex and community centre for the continuation of its annual Stockhausen Concerts and Courses Kürten. All of the concerts, courses, seminars and rehearsals take place at the school complex. Also the organisation office and the practice rooms are located at the school complex. The address is: Olpenerstraße 4, 51515 Kürten. The on-location organisation office will open at 9 a.m. starting on Thursday, July 25th 2019.

Zum 18. Mal steht die Musik Karlheinz Stockhausens für neun Tage im Zentrum von Konzerten, Interpretationskursen, Seminaren, Vorträgen und Diskussionen. Zu den Stockhausen-Konzerten und -Kursen Kürten 2019 sind Komponisten, Interpreten, Musikwissenschaftler, Klangregisseure und Musikliebhaber herzlich eingeladen.

Konzerte
In neun Konzerten werden instrumentale, vokale und elektronische Werke Karlheinz Stockhausens aufgeführt. Bei den Konzerten wirken die Dozenten der Meisterkurse mit, die oftmals viele Jahre mit Stockhausen zusammengearbeitet haben, aber auch international renommierte Gastmusiker und Ensembles. An drei Abenden spielen ausgewählte Kursteilnehmer Kompositionen, die im Rahmen der Meisterkurse einstudiert worden sind. Alle Generalproben sind für die Teilnehmer der Kurse offen.

Die Teilnehmer der Meisterkurse werden gebeten, bei der schriftlichen Anmeldung anzugeben, welche Werke aus dem Lehrangebot der Dozenten vorbereitet werden. Die Vorbereitung für die Meisterklassen wird schon vor den Kursen von den Dozenten unterstützt. Die Kontaktadressen werden nach der Anmeldung übermittelt.
INORI-Gesten (Leitung: Alain Louafi) Aufgrund der besonderen Bedeutung, die der Synthese von Musik und Gestik im Werk Stockhausens zukommt, werden in diesem Kurs die Gesten aus der Komposition INORI (1973–74) einstudiert. Der Kurs findet täglich morgens vor sämtlichen anderen Veranstaltungen statt und richtet sich an alle interessierten Teilnehmer.
Klangregie (Leitung: Kathinka Pasveer, Klangregisseur; Reinhard Klose – Toningenieur) Das Zentrum für Stockhausen-Raummusik bietet einen Kurs für Klangregisseure, Toningenieure, Musiker und Musikfreunde an, in dem vermittelt wird, welche Aspekte aus tontechnischer Sicht bei der Aufführung von Stockhausens elektronischen, aber auch vokalen und instrumentalen Werken zu berücksichtigen sind. Die klangtechnische Regiearbeit erfolgt im Zusammenhang mit den täglichen Proben und Konzerten.
Neben den täglichen Konzerten, offenen Proben, Meisterklassen und Konzerteinführungen gibt es Seminare, Vorträge und Workshops zur Musik Stockhausens von internationalen Stockhausen-Experten. Diese Veranstaltungen richten sich sowohl an Kenner der Musik Stockhausens als auch an jene, die bisher nur wenig mit ihr vertraut sind, aber mehr darüber wissen wollen.Rudolf Frisius, Germany: Electronic Music

Preise
Für die besten Interpretationen von Stockhausen- Werken in den Teilnehmerkonzerten verleiht die Stockhausen-Stiftung für Musik nach dem Abschlusskonzert drei Preise in Höhe von 4000 €, 2500 € und 1500 €. Die Preise können auch auf mehrere Musiker aufgeteilt werden.
Ort
Kürten ist Stockhausens Heimatstadt, in der er von 1965 bis 2007 gelebt hat. Die Stockhausen-Gemeinde Kürten liegt etwa 30 km östlich von Köln im Bergischen Land und stellt der Stockhausen-Stiftung für Musik bereits zum 18. Mal sein Schulzentrum und das Bürgerhaus für die Durchführung der Stockhausen- Konzerte und -Kurse Kürten zur Verfügung. Im Schulzentrum finden alle Abendkonzerte, Kurse, Seminare und Proben statt. Auch das Tagungsbüro und die Probenräume sind im Schulzentrum untergebracht. Die Adresse lautet: Olpenerstraße 4, 51515 Kürten. Das Tagungsbüro ist ab Donnerstag, dem 25. Juli 2019, 9.00 Uhr geöffnet.

Eine Gebühr in Höhe von 360 € ermöglicht die Teilnahme an allen Veranstaltungen. Darin ist die Vermittlung einer Unterkunft enthalten. Reise, Unterkunft und Verpflegung übernimmt jeder Teilnehmer selbst.

On November 14th 1994 the Stockhausen Foundation for Music was ratified as a non-profit foundation having as its purpose "the advancement of musicology including the stimulation of music culture based on the creative oeuvre of Professor Karlheinz Stockhausen" (paragraph 2.2 of the foundation statutes).
The Stockhausen Foundation for Music is in a position to fulfil this mandate due to the fact that the biographical and musical stations of the composer are documented in its archives by way of composition sketches, scores, recordings, instruments, costumes and requisites, photographs and films, and comprehensive written sources, and accessible to scientific research.
In addition, one of the responsibilities of the foundation is to continue the Stockhausen Concerts and Courses Kürten, which have taken place every summer since they were initiated by Stockhausen in 1998. The uniqueness of this event lies in its combination of concerts, master classes, composition seminars and scientific symposia aimed at a large, international audience. In order to be able to mediate Stockhausen’s music and art of interpretation, ideas, thoughts and observations in this way, the support of friends and patrons is needed.
Therefore, the Stockhausen Foundation for Music would like to ask you to make a contribution to help fulfil its mission, so that the Stockhausen Concerts and Courses Kürten, its most ambitious project to date, can be continued.
